Psoriasis is the medical terminology for an autoimmune condition that causes a fast buildup of skin cells. The accumulation of skin cells often results in the formation of bumps and scales on the skin.

When psoriasis appears on the skin, it presents redness around the scales and inflammation. The scales are often thick, whitish-silver, and in some cases, they could crack and bleed.

Psoriasis is caused by a rapid skin production process that starts from deep within the skin and gradually grows to the surface.

Often, the scales develop on joints like the elbow and knees. However, they can appear anywhere on the body, including the hands, feet, scalp, neck and even on the face.

The following are some home remedies to treat mild symptoms of psoriasis:

  • Take Dietary Supplements: Using dietary supplements is a way of fighting psoriasis from within. The National Psoriasis Foundation recommends the use of aloe vera, fish oil, vitamin D, and milk thistle, among others.
  • Keep Your Skin Moisturized At All Times: You can use humidifiers to keep the air in your home or office moist to prevent dry skin. Also, get moisturizers that are suitable for your body.
  • Avoid Using Soaps That Irritate Your Skin: Some perfumes and soaps contain compounds that may irritate your skin and cause inflamed psoriasis.
  • You May Have To Re-Evaluate Your Meals: Red meat, saturated fats, and refined sugar can trigger or flare up psoriasis. Omega-3 fatty acids, nuts, and cold-water fish can help reduce inflammation, making them helpful in managing psoriasis.
  • Take A Warm Water Bath: Soaking your body in warm water with olive oil, mineral oil, or milk can soothe the itching caused by psoriasis. It’s best to moisturize immediately after every bath.

Other ways to manage mild psoriasis at home include reducing stress and avoiding alcohol and smoking.
